What we have done, and what we have not.

A resource about telling somebody is not much use if some people cannot read it. This page says where we actually are rather than making a claim we have not earned.

What is in place

• Semantic HTML with a single main landmark, a skip link, and headings in order.
• Text that reflows to a single column and can be zoomed to 200% without loss.
• Visible keyboard focus on every interactive element.
• Colour contrast checked against WCAG 2.1 AA for body text and interface text.
• No content that depends on colour alone.
• Motion limited to a single decorative line drawing, which is suppressed entirely when your system asks for reduced motion.
• No auto-playing media, no carousels, no timed content, no pop-ups.
• Every page usable and readable with stylesheets and JavaScript disabled.
• A print stylesheet, because a lot of this gets printed and handed to somebody.

What is not finished

• An independent accessibility audit has not been carried out. When it has, the result will be published here, including anything it finds.
• Illustrations and their alternative text are still in production.
• The read-aloud video will need accurate captions and a transcript. Auto-captions are not adequate for this subject.
• An ASL and LSQ version of the read-aloud is planned but not funded.
• Plain-language and symbol-supported versions of the family sheet are planned.
• Large-print and dyslexia-friendly typesetting of the book are under consideration.

In the story itself

One accessibility decision sits in the book rather than on this website, and it is the most important one. The story deliberately offers three ways for a child to tell somebody: in words, by pointing, and by drawing it. A spoken “no” is never presented as the required response, and speech is never presented as the only valid way to disclose.

Body-safety materials that assume a verbal child leave out the children at highest risk. We would rather be told we have still got that wrong than assume we have got it right.
